QBCC Swimming Pool Safety Inspector Licence number #101182

Effective pool fencing helps keep kids safe. Pool Safety Angel’s mission is to further assist in the prevention of children drowning by ensuring that pool barriers are safe and comply with the pool safety standards.

Maintenance of pool fences and safety barriers is essential to reduce the number of drownings and serious immersion injuries of young children in swimming pools. Pool owners are responsible for ensuring pool barriers are maintained and damaged fencing or barriers are fixed immediately.

Current legislation was introduced to reduce incidences of young child drownings and the risk of injury to young children. All pool owners must comply to the legislation including those without young children, as children may visit their property with or without permission.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in Queensland for children under the age of 5 years old.

For every young child that drowns in a pool, approximately five are hospitalised due to immersion injuries, some of whom will suffer permanent brain damage.

Improve your pool safety

Parents, those supervising children and pool owners should follow the ABC of pool safety:

  • Always supervise your children near a pool
  • Begin swimming lessons for your children
  • Close the pool gate and keep your fence maintained

Child safety and pools

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in Queensland for children under 5.

For every child that drowns in a pool, nearly 5 attend hospitals because of immersion injuries; some of these children have permanent brain damage. Improve your pool safety by following these tips to Stay Swim Safe:

  • Always STAY close to kids in the pool: Effective pool safety depends on the vigilance of parents and carers supervising young children around pools at all time.
  • Start Swimming lessons: Many parents start swimming lessons are never a substitute for supervision, but learning to swim does reduce the possibility of drowning.
  • Keep and maintain a SAFE pool fence:  It is important to make sure that your pool gate always self-closes and self-latches and that you check your pool fence to ensure it complies. For more information on pool fencing laws, visit contact your local council.
